RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages providing entry to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
